Job Summary
Primary Purpose and Job Description:
The Emerging Technologies Librarian leads the development, delivery, and evaluation of innovative digital literacy services and technology initiatives, empowers staff and community members to use new digital tools, explores emerging trends to enhance services, and advances equitable access to technology. The Librarian collaborates across departments and with community partners to ensure responsive, inclusive service delivery and participates fully as a member of the public service team, including serving as Person-in-Charge (PIC).
Key Function and Accountabilities
- Design and deliver inclusive digital literacy programs for diverse audiences, including instruction in devices, online tools, and emerging technologies.
- Provide in-depth technology assistance to the public, supporting a wide range of needs from basic skills to advanced inquiries.
- Deliver reference and readers’ advisory services as part of the public service team
- Develop instructional material and guides that support independent learning
- Analyze and assess trends and recommend, research, and evaluate emerging technologies for public service applications aligned with community needs and the Library’s strategic priorities.
- Act as an internal consultant, advising and assisting staff with technology troubleshooting, digital resources, and service support.
- Assist with maintenance of the Library’s website, ensuring AODA compliance.
- Assist with digital creation and maker services by providing and scheduling instruction and programming
- Liaise with City of Orillia IT Dept. to support the efficient operations of the Library’s hardware and software resources.
- Assist the Director of Information Services with the general management and day-to-day operations of the Department, including serving as the primary point of contact in the Director’s absence and making recommendations for service improvements and workflow changes.
- Manage lendable technology collections and related services.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining the safety and comfort of the Library during in-charge shifts; reports issues and incidents to the appropriate personnel.
- Address customer service issues as needed and support staff in providing excellent customer service.
- Participates in departmental planning, projects, and committees.
- Project lead for CELA Library Partners Program
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Technical/ Professional Requirements
- Strong reference and public service skills.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering training or instructional programs.
- Knowledge of current and emerging technologies, including digital tools, web platforms and trends in library service.
- Familiarity with integrated library systems, online resources, and digital products.
- Understanding of digital equity, privacy, and safe technology use.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong problem-solving, project coordination, and time management abilities.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Adaptability and a proactive approach to change and innovation.
- Available to work evenings, weekends and daytime shifts, as required.
- Successful completion of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
Education Requirements
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in Library and Information Science or its equivalent
- Demonstrated successful experience of 2 years in a public library
Compensation
$37.25 - $44.84 per hour
