The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked in the top five among peer institutions in North America. Overview: Repoorting to the Web Project Manager and Content Strategy Librarian, this position will play a vital role in supporting digital initiatives, managing online content, and creating documentation with a focus on user-friendly digital experiences. The ideal candidate will have a passion for technology, a strong understanding of library systems, and a commitment to user-focused services.
Responsibilities:
- Web and Content Maintenance:
- Create, edit, and audit web content to ensure accessibility and usability.
o Work with ITS (Information Technology Services) Service Managers and UTL Communications to ensure web spaces effectively communicate about library spaces, collections, and services.
o Support the design and maintenance of the library websites, ensuring they are user-friendly, accessible, and up to date.
o Enhance the overall user experience of the website, including navigation, layout, and functionality.
o Participate in content health initiatives by supporting content audits, quality assurance processes, and the application of web standards and style guidelines
o Use web analytics and user feedback to help assess content performance and identify opportunities for improvement. - Training and Documentation:
o Create and maintain user guides, tutorials, and training material to support library staff in creating and managing digital content.
o Conduct training sessions and workshops to educate staff on the use of ITS supported tools and platforms for content delivery. - User Support and Outreach:
o Provide point-of-need support to staff and users, troubleshooting and responding to help tickets for various digital services.
o Collaborate with library departments and academic units to promote library collections, spaces, and services through outreach initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in library, archival or information science from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity, anti-racism and accessibility.
- Strong working knowledge of web development languages (i.e. HTML, CSS, Javascript)
- Experience with content management systems, issue tracking tools, and collaboration tools such as Drupal, WordPress, Jira, XWiki, Sharepoint, and GitLab.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to and interest in learning new technologies, platforms, and workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of UX principles and methodologies, with demonstrated experience applying them to web design and digital services.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and best practices for web design.
- Knowledge of emerging trends and technologies in academic libraries.
- Demonstrated experience developing or delivering training sessions and workshops.
- Previous experience working in a library or academic environment
- Understanding of interoperability concepts (e.g., APIs, JSON feeds, structured data, and headless or decoupled web platforms) and how they enable connected digital services.
- Knowledge of web analytics tools and an understanding of how analytics can be used to inform content decisions.
Salary and Terms of Appointment:
It is anticipated that this position will be filled at the Librarian I/II level, subject to review and experience. Minimum salary: LIB I: $83,080; LIB II: $86,687. (Salary is dependent on rank at hire and qualifications) The expected salary range is $83,080 - $86,687, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates. This is an 8-month contractually-limited term appointment.
