Reporting to the Manager, Collections & Access Services, the Collections Co-op position supports improved access to the Library’s collection. This position assists in cataloguing local history documents and objects, digitizing local history documents and integrating them into the Integrated Library System (ILS), as well as assisting with other department projects as assigned. The role provides hands-on experience in collections and access, local history and cataloguing standards, fostering professional development for students enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) co-op program.

As the Intern, Collections & Access Services (Co-op), you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

Collections & Access:

  • Make recommendations to the Manager, Collections and Access Services regarding the accessibility and placement of local history resources, including the types of materials and formats offered, locations and space allocations by collection/format, and methods of display/shelving
  • Assist with general maintenance of catalogue records within the ILS, and provide access services support as required
  • Organize, scan, digitize, describe, and upload archival materials
  • Maintain good records of acquisitions through all stages

Digital Literacy:

  • Utilize software and digital resources to support local history collections and access
  • Assist in the creation of learning resources to support digital access to local history collections
  • Develop a strong knowledge of the Library’s Memory Stations and make recommendations to the Maker Team regarding the promotion and use of the resource

Customer Service:

  • Promote and demonstrate use of electronic resources/online databases including eBooks to customers as required.
  • Demonstrate the use of the online public catalogue to customers, and assist customers in the use and troubleshooting of electronic devices as required

Other:

  • Stay informed about trends in public libraries
  • Participate in mandatory training, staff meetings, and workshops as required.
  • Perform additional tasks and support special projects assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an enthusiastic student who is returning in January 2027 to a post-graduate MLIS University program or a related field.

The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of cataloguing standards, MARC records. We are seeking an individual with demonstrated ability to articulate library policies and to interact with customers of all ages and backgrounds. Clear and concise documentation skills and superior interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively work in a team environment and/or independently are a must.

The successful candidate for Intern, Collections & Access Services (Co-op) will be required to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends in the office (as required).

This position offers an hourly rate of $30.83.
