Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Librarian, the Children Services Coordinator is responsible for promoting a welcoming and inviting library environment, providing front-line customer service to visitors of the Library and is responsible for delivering a library service that meets the aligns with library values: Universal & Equitable Access, excellent Service, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, Sustainability and Meaningful Relationships. Delivering excellent, community-based library services to children and their families that promote the development of core early literacy competencies through programming that is inclusive of underserved and vulnerable populations. These outcomes will be realized through three major activities: programming, collection development, and community engagement. The pay grade for this position is Library Assistant III.

Essential Qualifications

  • Library Technician Diploma.
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university with course work in children's literature and education.
  • 3 years of directly related professional work experience, including experience in developing innovate programs and services for children and their families that are welcoming and inclusive of historically marginalized groups.
  • Related education and or experience may be considered.

Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise in a wide variety of children’s literature, publishing and service trends.
  • Thorough knowledge of procedures and skills applicable to collection development.
  • Knowledge of Library reference resources; ability to provide competent reference services.
  • Able to demonstrate superior communication (verbal and written), problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to create and deliver quality presentations at a Library program or event.
  • Ability to work externally with a variety of individuals, organizations and community groups.
  • Ability to perform the work of a Public Services Assistant including providing customer-focused instruction in the use of library software and devices to a diverse audience of users.
  • Proven history of excellent customer service, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions for challenges that arise due to shifting work-related exigencies.
  • Eager to contribute to the collegial atmosphere of the library, and to work well in a team environment that adheres to and emphasizes the principles of a respectful workplace.
  • Ability to perform work in a fast-paced environment in which simultaneous performing of multiple tasks is often required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of community needs and barriers faced by diverse populations including knowledge of anti racism, inclusion, accessibility and equity principles.

Hours/Days of work: Temporary position. Monday to Friday, with some Saturdays, 9:00am to 5:00pm

Length of Assignment: February 3, 2025 until the return of the incumbenthr@nelson.ca

 

Compensation

$37.48
