OLA Council Vice – President (3 year term) Toronto (Remote) , ON

Description

Grow your skills! Volunteer to serve as a Council President (3-year term)

Who We Are:

The Ontario Library Association (OLA) is all about leading, inspiring, and shaking up the library and information services world. We’re big on growth, innovation, and sticking to our values—diversity, equity, and inclusion are in our DNA. We’re on the lookout for awesome people from all library backgrounds, all across Ontario, and we’d love to see applications from Indigenous Peoples, those with diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences, and everyone who brings a unique perspective to the table.

The Role:

Are you working in libraries in Ontario and looking to grow your leadership skills? As Vice President/President Elect of a council, you’ll be contributing to the driving force behind the work we do while also creating networks, improving your leadership skills and advocating for libraries in your sector.

OLA is currently accepting nominations for Vice President for the following Councils:

OSLA (Ontario School Library Association)

OLBA (Ontario Library Board Association)

OPLA (Ontario Public Library Association)

OCULA (Ontario College and University Library Association)

ABO-Franco (Association des bibliothèques de l’Ontario-Franco)

OHLIA (Ontario Health Library and Information Association)

OLITA (Ontario Library and Information Technology Association)

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Growing your leadership skills
  • Keeping our vision, mission, values and goals front and center.
  • Dreaming big with us—working with other council Presidents to plan and vision for OLA’s future.
  • Building connections with all types of libraries.
  • Getting involved in finance planning (yes, the exciting world of budgets!).

Your Responsibilities:

Meetings: You’ll lead council meetings and work closely with our Executive Director to get agendas and materials sorted out. Our meetings are primarily virtual and you will work with the ED to find a schedule that works for all council members.

OLA Board: In the last year of your term (as council past president), you’ll also sit on the OLA Board where you’ll contribute to guiding the vision and mission of OLA with other OLA board members. This is a great opportunity to flex the skills you’ve developed in the first two years of your term!

AGM: You’ll help guide your council’s Annual General Meeting with the help of OLA’s Executive Director and Director of Operations.

Who We're Looking For:

  • Passionate about OLA’s mission and values.
  • Committed to inclusive librarianship.
  • Interest in developing leadership and facilitation skills.
  • Interest in non-profit strategic planning is a plus.
  • Interested in government relations and advocacy

The Nitty-Gritty:

  • Term: 3 years of fun and leadership. Year 1 as Vice President, Year 2 as President, Year 3 as Past President and OLA Board Member
  • Time Commitment: We get it—life’s busy. OLA is super flexible, with virtual and hybrid meetings that fit around your schedule. Expect monthly board meetings, some planning sessions, and of course the annual OLA Super Conference. There are also several optional events like the Forest of Reading Festival.
  • Perks: Tons of networking, leadership skills, professional development, and the chance to represent OLA at big events. Plus, we cover travel expenses when you need to head to Toronto.

How to Throw Your Hat in the Ring:

Ready to join this great team? Submit your nomination here, and if we get more than one, the OLA Membership will vote in early December.
