ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

The New Westminster Public Library is situated on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Halq'eméylem speaking peoples.

Founded in 1865, the New Westminster Public Library (the Library) is committed to providing accessible and responsive community services, that balance the needs of traditional library users with those seeking the tools and experiences of a modern, technologically relevant public space. The library provides dynamic and vibrant means for the community to continually grow, learn, and succeed.

The NWPL is made up of two branches (the Main Branch and the Queensborough Branch) and is supported by an incredible staff and Library Board. In 2017/2018, the Main Branch underwent an extensive renovation to ensure the building and services could better meet the changing needs of the community and remain a welcoming space for readers, learners, creators, and community members. During the renovation, the Library also launched a new web site, the iConnect Lab, and additional digital resources.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting directly to the Library Board, the Chief Librarian is responsible for the overall management and operation of the NWPL. The Chief Librarian oversees the planning and delivery of library services, and achieving goals set by the Board, within the framework of the Library Act and other related legislation and regulations. The Chief Librarian provides leadership in the implementation of the strategies, policies, and plans to support services and an organizational culture that is community-focused, inclusive, and grounded in sound financial management and operations. The Chief Librarian acts as a spokesperson for the NWPL, advocating in support of library services and ensuring strong linkages and partnerships with both internal and external communities.

This position requires a master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in a senior management position, in a unionized environment, with demonstrated professional experience. The position requires an inclusive, collaborative, and strategic leader who understands the role of public libraries in building resilient, inclusive, and engaged communities today and into the future. The role requires excellent interpersonal communication with the ability to develop an effective, inclusive, and collaborative leadership team. The position requires the ability to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Check.

The salary for this position is $128,125 - $152,875, supplemented by a competitive total compensation package administered by the City of New Westminster, including the Municipal Pension Plan, Compressed Day, and comprehensive Benefits.
