North Vancouver District Public Library inspires learning, discovery, creativity and collaboration in our community. Serving almost 90,000 residents across three current locations in the District of North Vancouver, NVDPL has supported a love of reading and culture of learning and discovery for 55 years. Our library is the destination for our growing community to connect, share, and inspire.

With funding from Young Canada Works, NVDPL is currently recruiting an Auxiliary Student Librarian. Reporting to the Manager, Community Connections, this position is responsible for providing Information Desk work including reference and reader’s advisory, supporting patron in accessing digital resources and proactively managing a busy public space.This position also includes working with programming teams to prepare and facilitate library programs with a focus on Teen Services, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include:

  • In a Library or Information Science degree program at an ALA-accredited university with intention to graduate in December 2022 or Spring 2023
  • Registration in the Young Canada Works online candidate inventory; meeting program eligibility criteria- refer to: https://young-canada-works.canada.ca/Account/Register
  • Ability to deliver outstanding customer service
  • Ability to take initiative, problem-solve and handle difficult interactions
  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of intellectual freedom and inclusiveness
  • Proficiency with current technologies and equipment used in a library environment

The most suitable candidates:

  • Feel energized serving members of the public from all walks of life, with positivity and enthusiasm
  • Have experience with, and a desire to work with Teens
  • Understand the role of the library as a community hub, and the librarian as a facilitator of sharing knowledge
  • Make customer service a top priority while using good judgement to apply library policies
  • Are comfortable with uncertainty and curious to learn more
  • Are interested in a career in public libraries

The hourly rate for this unionized position is $28.56 per hour (2021 rates) plus 12% in Lieu of Benefits. This work requires flexible availability, including evening and weekend shifts. The position is for 16 weeks: September 6th to December 23, 2022.
