TITLE: Library Assistant – Public Services

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of the Burnaby Campus Librarian, the AC Library Assistant – Public Services will be responsible for providing basic library staffing and duties related to the circulation of library materials, providing reference and research services, assisting with ID card creation, as well as creating research help and social media content (e.g., research guides and blog posts). Additionally, this position will allow room for assisting with library programs such as book club, study sessions, etc. This position will require evening and weekend shifts, including the responsibility of opening and closing the library space. Remote working from home will be required 1 day per week for the Winter 2022 term, with future remote working a possibility.

ABOUT ALEXANDER COLLEGE LIBRARY:

The Alexander College Library plays a key role in achieving the educational directives of the college by serving as an information centre in which students engage in academic, cultural and social activities. The Library is dedicated to providing the highest level of resources (whether traditional or digital) and instructional services so students and faculty can perform research, study, and surf the web with confidence. Services are thus patron-oriented, and are under constant re-evaluation to ensure they are up-to-date and responsive. In this way, staff and students can get the most out of the resources available to them. To fulfill its role in supporting the College’s educational mission, AC Library is committed to maintaining an environment conducive to study and research.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

The Library Assistant will report to the Burnaby Campus Librarian.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE:

Full time, 1-year Temporary Contract

WORK WEEK:

The Library Assistant will work 40 hours per week.

  • Hours will be assigned by the Librarian(s).
  • Evenings and Saturdays will be required.
  • Remote working will be required (Winter 2022, possibly longer).

This schedule may be adjusted at any time during the term of the contract by the Librarian per the Unit's needs.

LOCATION:

Primarily Burnaby Campus, flexibility to travel between campuses will be required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Library Technician Diploma or Degree in a related field is preferred
  • Minimum 1 year related work experience or equivalent.
  • Academic library experience an asset.
  • Additional post-secondary education an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Highly efficient using Outlook, Microsoft Suite, and other presentation tools such as Canva
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in the use of library-related technologies such as integrated library systems, e-book platforms and library databases
  • Ability to work effectively and independently, with limited supervision, and as part of a team
  • Possess knowledge of Library of Congress Classification, MARC records, and RDA standards
  • Experience teaching research to students/patrons an asset
  • Ability to create posters, infographics, and other digital media an asset
  • Knowledge about how to research across a variety of science and arts subjects an asset
  • Knowledge of the BC College and University system

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Duties

  • Manage the library facility
    • Provide computer hardware and printing support
    • Ensure that library users are adhering to relevant policies & behaving appropriately
      • Clean minor messes and trash
    • Manage the print collection including shelf reading, filing books, etc.
      • Facilitate study room bookings
      • Open and close of the library space
      • Supervise student workers
  • Conduct one-on-one research tutorials for students
    • Conduct reference interview to determine user research needs
    • Demonstrate and provide access to databases and digital assets
  • Create ID cards
    • Create physical and virtual ID cards for AC students, faculty, and staff
    • Ensure records are accurate and adhere to stated library policy
    • Maintain privacy of user data
  • Circulation
    • Use the catalogue to check print materials in and out of the library
    • Process late fee payments & fine appeals
    • Process holds requests & course reserves
  • Provide reports and other content to Librarians
    • Prepare and submit reports in a timely manner, as requested by the Librarians
    • Assist with the maintenance of library related user accounts (e.g., Papercut, database access, OPAC, and other)
    • Create content for social media, infographics, blog posts, research guides
    • Notify Librarians of any emerging concerns or issues pertaining to either library
  • Participate in Library Division meetings and other staff meetings as required
  • Assist Librarians with the creation and delivery of presentations, workshops, and other programs
  • Assist Librarians with reference services in traditional and virtual contexts, including on-desk and via AskAway
  • May be required to support wider administrative functions throughout the College as assigned by the Librarians or Director
